Do you need Anti-Virus/Anti-Ware software on a Mac?

I'm considering purchasing my first Mac (a MacBook Pro) and wondered if it would be worth downloading some sort of security software for it.

I know Mac's are extremely secure but I download quite a lot and wondered if it would be worth getting some software to make sure nothing damages it.

Anyone's thoughts or insights would be great thanks!
