I'm out of town and just wondering if I should wait until I get home to backup my stuff first or if it's safe to download now?

I never hesitate to update OTA. Even when I'm abroad. Luckily for me I have never experienced any issues updating my device.
Ps: you probably mean iOS 10.0.2

May be off base about this- believe the big ones (9 to 10) are the ones some prefer to wait for.

The smaller incremental updates (#.1 or #.2) are usually fixes - little reason to wait on those. They push them out quickly cuz they matter.

I had a glitch with 10.0.2 -- phone went into "data recovery" mode and it ran for about 20-min and then was fine. Never seen that before. Just got a white screen saying "Data Loss, try data recovery?" and I hit yes.

I updated my mothers 6s yesterday and have not experienced any issues. You're safe
