Clearing "Recents" from Messenger after double clicking home button on iPad

I installed the OS 8 yesterday and now when I double click the home button on my iPad, there appears at the top of the screen Recent users of Messenger who have not sent me messages, but I do have them in my contact list. How do I clear these annoying circles off the screen? I tried swiping them away, and resetting the notifications on Messenger, but nothing seems to work!

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Scroll down to the Contacts section

Show in App Switcher > Phone Favorites > [OFF]
Show in App Switcher > Recents > [OFF]
