Is there any way, short of jailbreak, to have the Spotlight search bar be empty every time I open it? I've decided that I want as much of a "desktop zero" UI as possible which means putting apps into folders and then placing the folders onto other Home Screen pages and ignore them. Basically, I want to use Spotlight like a Start Menu, swipe down and type the name of the app I want, pick it from the list.

Problem is, half the time when I open Spotlight, it's prefilled with the last app search I did.

I don't think there is a way. One of the reasons I never used Spotlight. It would make sense for it to clear the field automatically once you open what you were looking for...

It looks like Apple addressed that. The search box in Spotlight now has the prior search string "selected" so that just typing will replace it.
