I'm getting a macbook pro today off Craigslist and I was wondering if I can take my SSD out of my current one and just pop it into the one in buying or do I have to go through time machine or something.

Depends on which model from and to. They may be entirely different tech if the ''to' is newer then the 'from'.
Worked like a charm. I went from a mid-2010 MBP to a late 2011 MBP and all I had to do was swap the SSD and it booted up fine. I just had to sign in to iCloud and iMessages again.
