Catalina: How to add content into my library so I can sync it with my mobile devices?

I am having trouble synching my books (non-DRMed epub/pdf) and music (non-DRMed m4a) to my iPad.

I've seen guides (like this one: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/mac-help/mchl562e1847/mac and https://www.imore.com/how-sync-your-iphone-and-ipad-your-mac-macos-catalina) on how to sync via finder. But what I cannot find is a guide on how to add things into my library so I can then sync them into my device.

I think you need to add them to the Books app on your Mac first.

I’m not sure though.
