Carplay forgetting where I was up to when I disconnected

I connect my iPhone 6s to apple carplay through a cord and sometimes when I reconnect after leaving my car with my phone it remembers where I was up to in a long podcast but other times it doesn't and plays a completely different track from my library. I can't figure out what I am doing differently each of these times!

How can I ensure that carplay remembers where I was up to when I disconnect/reconnect my iphone because it's quite annoying having to scroll through a 3 hour podcast to re-find the spot I was up to last time!

Are you closing the podcast app? If you close it out it may lose your place.

I get better results if I open the car door (cutting power to the head unit) before disconnecting my iPhone. Alpine ILX-007
