Can't transfer contacts from iPhone 1 to iPhone 4s

I have a ton of contacts in a iPhone 1 that I want to transfer to a iPhone 4s. I've tried backing up the original to iTunes and then restoring the 4s from iTunes...but none of the content (contacts, music, or photos) appear on the 4s. Any clues as to why the data doesn't transfer?
