can't sync new XS max with itunes

I have a 2011 imac that I just discovered can't be updated to the newest OS. I planned to get a new computer in a few months when I can afford it. in the meantime, I'm wondering if the reason I can't sync my itunes with the new phone is because it won't let me use itunes below the one that comes with the newest OS (meaning I'll have to wait till I can get a new computer) or if its some other glitch I can fix now. Thanks!

I've not heard of an instance where you couldn't update an iPhone due to the installed iTunes version. If an old early 2009 model MacBook running El Capitan can manage an iPhone 8 and an iPhone X then surely your 20011 iMac should be able to, in my opinion. Granted, I've since purchased a 2017 MacBook Pro.
