Can't seem to find a good way to set up my email...

I am using Gmail IMAP, unfortunately without push. I would like to have it so my inbox is not always full. The mail app on iPhone downloads all of the messages it can at once and once they get deleted it keeps downloading more.

What I am wondering is if it is possible for me to set up the IMAP so it only downloads new messages and once I delete them they are still searchable with the new 3.0 update...which I have. Its just that once I delete them my inbox is no longer cluttered, but they also aren't searchable. I don't know what to do.

The advantage of using IMAP (Gmail's or anyone else's) is that the folders stay in sync no matter where you access them. So you can't delete them in one place and expect to access them elsewhere.

However - what you can do, and the reason to use IMAP in the first place - is create folders to put those emails that you don't want cluttering up your inbox.
