Can I keep my 7 year old "vintage" iNac , use it as a monitor with a new Mac Mini ?

I hate throwing away this monitor when it looks so good but it is slow and has completely shut down. it wont start up for longer than 1 minute before it shuts off so i was going to buy a new imac today and then saw this option of using a mac mini with an old monitor. would it work?

Not likely... as the display isn't accessible by itself.
