The app stated it was free but then asked for my credit card details. I need to be reassured that there will be no charges for using this app.

AppleIDs need to have a valid form of payment associated with the AppleID... the app is indeed free to download, and use... if you use the app to purchase something, the payment method on file with your AppleID will be charged unless you maintain a balance on your AppleID via the use of Apple Gift Cards.
