Can I activate my iMessage without service?

I bought this from a friend and factory reset it. I don't know how to activate iMessage but my FaceTime works.?

go into setting, log into iMessage with your apple ID and password. it should activate using your email address ( like an iPod touch )
you do have to be on wifi if you don't have service via sim card.
