Can’t Reinstall OS on Erased iMac

Help! I’m giving my old iMac to a friend and I’ve erased the hard drive. However, I cannot reinstall the operating system. This is an older computer, so I’m trying to reinstall OS X Mavericks, but when I get to the stage where it says, “ Select the disk where you want to install OS X,”, no disks are available. It’s just blank. Any ideas?

Is the hard drive partitioned as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

As @Just_Me_D pointed out, it sounds like the hard drive is not formatted correctly. Did you boot into the Recovery Partition? It sounds like when you erased the disk, you didn't reformat the disk as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
