Black iPhone 5

Hi all,

My brother called me up last night informing me that ever since the latest firmware update to his Note 2 phone, the battery time on the device has worsened. He did a factory reset and moved the firmware back and it improved up until my niece applied the update to his phone again.

He's usually busy at work and can't spend time on phone issues or worrying about battery time and all and though he loved the Note 2 overall, decided to move back to iPhone. He had used the iPhone 4 before the note 2 and is now looking at the iPhone 5. And since I'm using that now, he called me up about it.

The question he had was about the colour. He loved the Black model, however had been warned by his colleagues that it easily catches scratches and the paint easily peels off.

I personally own a white iPhone 5 so I couldn't comment on that. But upon searching here, I did find that some users have complains about the black model catching fingerprints too easily along with scratches and such?

If you're using a black iPhone 5, how goes your experience?

Regards.
Salman Khalid.

I don't have a scratch, chip or ding on my black iPhone 5 but neither I or anyone else can predict whether or not his iPhone, whether black or white, will get damaged because it will primarily depend on how he handles it.

I have had the 5 since launch and yes, I have minor blemishes on the bezel. I have had my phone in a case since day one, but that has not prevented the aforementioned blemishes from occurring, particularly in areas the various cases did not cover. If your brother is considering keeping his phone naked without a case, or is overly concerned about the possibility of minor nicks, for the lack of a better term, then perhaps white would be in his best interest. Based on my personal experience only of course.

PS, I feel he was misinformed by anyone stating this occurs 'easily'. Over time, with everyday use, there is a chance. But easily? No.

I have an iPhone 5 I've had for a while. I use it without a case and the back looks fine. The black is in no way inferior to the white.

Thanks, I'll let him know. I'm sure he'll be pleased :)

He plans on purchasing a solid case that covers most of it anyways and from what I've seen, he's barely ever going to remove the case to begin with.

The person who told him that the paint chips off easily claims that his iPhone's back got chipped after he picked it up with a wrong angle slightly rubbing his nail on the back. I told him that may not have been the case and possibly that guy got a defected phone in the first place (he had bought a used phone).

Anyways... Thanks! Will message my bro right now.

I had the black before switching to the white. I had the black one without a case for a while. I did get a ding, but it was really small. Other than that, there weren't any scratches or blemishes on it. I got the white because I thought it looked better. And it does.

I had a black for like 2 weeks til I switched to white. The black would get so many fingerprints, especially the back. You can rub it over the fingers & it would look dirty. Scratch wise I didn't have any but I still preferred the look of the white overall.

hmmm - sounds like he bought a dodgy phone to me - I've had my phone for a few months (and my son has had his since Christmas) and both are fine - he uses his "naked" and it does pick up the finger prints (you can get a static wipe for less than a quid which deals with those) and I use an arachnophobia aluminum case on mine - which protects the back and sides lovely - the front is also moved back by the nature of the case - but I've always found the screens on iPhone's are pretty sturdy anyway.

I got the black 5 on launch day. I always used a case on mine and havent had any issues with discoloration or anything bad like that. I just got a refurb i5 from apple and its brand new looking too. Not any marks on the paint and theres no telling how old it is. It seems like everyone uses cases anyways so im not sure what all this fuss is about. Black or white bezel, what do you prefer?

I bought mine on launch. I chose the black and although I have a screen protector on it, it is naked 90% of the time, and it is flawless.
