That or you have a bad battery which the Apple Store will take care of since there have been other incidents.

The fact that this happened right after a firmware update tells me it is something software related. Not hardware. This happened to me after the 2.1 update. Does the phone get warm at all?

I had this exact problem after doing 2.2. My battery would drain as if i was talking on the phone 3g while surfing even though it was just sitting in my pocket sleeping. It was also very warm as if I was using it. I believe the problem with mine was email trying to run in the background and getting stuck. So you could try removing all your email accounts and setting them back up first, but if that doesn't work you will need to do a full restore back to factory in iTunes and restore as new phone, DO NOT use your backup. This means you will lose everything, but it will fix your issue.

My battery has always gotten warm, (at least the one I got right after 2.1) but I thought that was just because I was using wifi? or extended calls....well my iPhone is out of warranty anyway...

Warm without use? Mine gets warm when I use it, but this was just sitting in my pocket.

Mine was getting warm yesterday while it was in my pocket. I did a reboot on it and so far I have not had any problems with it.

I'm having the same problem as the OP. I noticed yesterday afternoon that my battery was DEAD after being fully charged on sunday, which was when I upgraded to the new software 2.2.1. So I charged it up before leaving for work at 7pm, I just NOW took it out of my pocket at 2:35amEST and it's DEAD again! I didn't even USE it!!!! WTF!

So if if I restore it and use the back up, the problem will still exist?

If I set it up as a new phone, will all my apps and songs still be in my iTunes library to reload? I'm not worried about losing data, just music and apps that I've paid for.
