Audio Messaging in IOS 8

I am having trouble getting this feature to work. I hit the compose button in messaging and the microphone appears to the right of the text box. But after I select a contact the mic icon disappears. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's weird because I cannot record any audio until after I've selected a recipient. But as soon as I do, it works like a charm.
