AT&T Considering a $10 Cut On New iPhone's Plan

According to Cote Collaborative, AT&T will reduce the price of the entry level iPhone monthly plan from $69 to $59 when a new model is introduced in June.

The move would be designed to head off competition like the Palm Pre, but whether this information is based on any insider information or just market analysis is unclear. Either way, we shall have to wait and see if it comes to fruition. [The Street via MobileCrunch]

I will be really, really surprised if this happens... the data plan for all at&t pdas is $30 per month, whether it be a Blackjack II, Blackberry Bold, HTC Fuze, or an iPhone. The thing that separates a pda/data device from a consumer messaging device (which is $15/month for data) is Microsoft Exchange support. The original iPhone did not support Exchange, and the data plan was $20, which was essentially $15 for data, and $5 for the 200 text messages that came with the plan. The iPhone 3g came out, supported Exchange like all other data devices, and the data plan shot up to $30. IF at&t were to offer the data plan for $20 again, I would imagine that the up front price would go up from $199. Of course, this is all opinion, but so was the article that stated the prices would go down.

It has to be market speculation... I say this because the plan is $30, not $69. The iPhone data plan and the voice plan are separate and the only reason at&t says $69 on their site is due to the fact that you need a voice plan with the iPhone. Insider info would have stated $30 to $20 and that's all IMHO.

You'd have to be nuts to believe this could actually happen. The revenue that the iphone data plans produces for AT&T is astronomical. They've sold millions upon millions of these devices with the $30 data plan and have great success. Why would they willingly reduce the price per month when it honestly would not attract near enough customers to make up the cost.
