Apple Watch constant checking for update

I've been poring the interwebs since Friday trying to find a solution but so far I've hit dead ends. Anyone know how to make this either find an update or stop checking if it's up to date?

It’s not constant. It only searches If you go into software update in the settings app.

It's constant in that it never stops and never finds an update after I open it.

Basically I'm not understanding why it won't say up to date or show an update like so:

Have you tried using a home WiFi network to search for updates?
If it works on your home network, it could be something that your wireless carrier interferes with (e.g.: they don't want people to download updates over the mobile network).

I’d tried the phone a few times but not the watch - that did the trick, thanks!

I’d tried it on and off WiFi plus went so far as to uninstall my vpn, no dice. Restarting the watch got it ticking again.
