Apple TV4 to Home theatre - picture but no sound.

I have an Apple TV4. I am trying to connect to home theatre. I can get great picture but not sound. Gen3 was OK as it had separate optical output. Question for you clever people! If I was to connect a HDMI extractor to the AppleTV the type that has HDMI in and rca and toslink out, (an plug that to the audio of the receiver) would this overcome my sound problem! Cheers ... Being that we do not know what brand of home theatre system you have, have you tried changing the sound settings via the TV?
