So... Apple has pre-released the Apple TV 4K (3rd generation).

Two things I noticed:
  1. They ditched the Ethernet port on the base model, as well as Thread support.
  2. They dropped prices by 50$

Having a 1st gen TV 4K, I’m not sure if this would be worth an upgrade for me.

Like you, I have the 1st gen TV 4K and I know the new model is not worth it to me. The only issue I have with my current model is the Ethernet port doesn’t work and it’s been like that for a while, but the device is still usable and the video still looks amazing.

If this model conks out on me then I’ll upgrade, but until then, I’ll keep using what I have.

For me I see no compelling reason to upgrade my 2nd gen Apple TV 4K. It’s nice to see the storage bump and price reduction for those in the market to buy one.

I'm not planning to upgrade neither my Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K (2nd generation). There's nothing really compelling right now.

I agree with the consensus. I have the 4K gen 2. I believe the gen 3 gives HDR 10+ and 4K60. But that just doesn’t make enough of a difference for my video viewing. It has the A15 and more processing power is usually good for video. But I rarely see try gen 2 A12 struggle. Scrolling between apps is about the only time I see anything close to a slow down (if gaming with it, maybe this would be a tangible difference maker).

But removing the Ethernet port and lowering cost is wise. I do use the Ethernet port but I have an 8 port switch in my home network setup. Most people have their ISP’s modem-router-switch. Ithink most have one Ethernet port. It’s a Wi-Fi world we live in except for a few us tech nerds :)

I have the second gen and I don't think third gen is much of an upgrade.

They had an incredible sale just a ways back, 4K Gen 2 32GB, under 100$. All gen 2 has the Ethernet port.
Imho at that price it was the best value on the market (given how long they are supported, integration, and features it provides). I’d buy that at that price today if I didn’t already own the same gen 2 I paid 169 for :).

Depends on the price.

True HoneyB, it happened to me this past week. I REALLY wanted the new HomePod 2 (two of them). If it had been intro’d at 250 I would have been a day one buyer. 275? It’s be close. But coming in at 300 was enough price for me to dig in->hold off.

But I want them! :) the first good sale or first release at the refurb store and I’ll crack under the Apple pressure :).
