Apple Sleep App Question

With the new software, I decided to give the Apple sleep app another try. I like the depth of data that is available. What I DON'T like is the sleep face. When the sleep app activates, it changes the watch face to one I do not want. If I wake up and tap the watch face, there are very specific things I want to see and the sleep face doesn't have it.

So, is there a way to change the default Sleep app face??

In theory, you can set the watch face in the Settings app on your iPhone (not the Watch app).

Note: I have not tested it.

I have the sleep face turned off, and instead have a shortcut on my phone that switches my watch to a Numerals Duo face, turns on theater mode, and turns off AOD. Then I have another shortcut that runs when sleep focus turns off to switch the watch face back, turn off theater mode, turn on AOD.

Shortcuts, personal automations.

Thanks for taking the time to show all the steps!! And here I thought it was going to be complicated. :rotfl:

I don't think I need that process because I have a separate watch for sleeping, and DND + Theater Mode are always on.

There really should be some way to just change the default face for the Sleep app. I'll keep looking.

You said, "I have the sleep face turned off." How did you do that? When I turn on the Sleep app and it activates, it switches the face and I don't see anyway to change it. I'll try again tonight.

I'm curious about what face you're seeing. Could you post a screenshot of it?

On the phone. Settings / Focus / Sleep. There is now a "Customize Screens" section (where it looks like you can set the watch face you want for sleep rather than use my old fashioned shortcut steps above). Tap the "Options" at the bottom. Turn off "Sleep screen".

I think that the steps were different on iOS 15 - I believe you set this within the Health app, under the Sleep section. I still have my old iPhone X on iOS 15 - I'll check that later.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

I forgot that some of the settings for the sleep app are in Settings>Focus. There, you can select whatever phone face and watch face you want for the sleep app.

Thank you!!

And now I’ve completely changed this when I discovered that in settings / focus / sleep that I can set a specific watchface for sleep focus. When sleep focus ends, it goes back to the face that was showing before sleep focus started.

So now I just turn on theater mode when sleep focus starts with a shortcut and turn it off when sleep focus ends with another shortcut.

Dang it! Mine still isn't working. I went to settings>Focus>Sleep (as doogald suggested) and set the watch face to Activity Digital. When Sleep focus started last night, the watch face switched to the X-Large face and I could not change it. Today, I added a shortcut that switches the watch face at bedtime, but I'm not optimistic. With the purchase of the iPhone 14, I get a free 30 minute session with an Apple Specialist. Maybe he/she can tell me what to do.

Problem solved!!

To select the watch face you want for any Focus, such as Sleep Focus, go to Settings>Focus>Sleep and under Customize Screens, choose the watch face you want for that Focus mode. (This is what doogald said to do above.) BUT, you also have to click on Options beneath the Customize Screens and TURN OFF Sleep Screen. If you don't turn that off, the phone ignores your customized selections and instead uses the defaults.

By the way, the free 30 minute session with an Apple Specialist was a complete waste of time. The specialist had no idea what I was talking about. Their role is to ask you survey questions and then guide you through any VERY basic things you don't know such as how to take a picture. I'm going to boldly assert I know more about the iPhone and the Apple Watch than that dude. The only useful thing he suggested was calling Apple Care. The Apple Care service agent I spoke with figured out the solution in just a few minutes.

Glad to hear you have a solution. Too bad that it was not by an Apple Store Specialist, but that's proof that there is always place for improvement.

Ah, since I had already mentioned turning off sleep screens few replies above, I didn't think of that as something that would affect this.

Apple should make it clear in the focus settings, though, when you select a watch face for the focus that you may want to turn off the sleep screen option, too.

That said, I'm going to add specific watch faces for specific foci going forward. When I cook, I like to have access to the timer complication, so I can create a focus for that and add a watch face with that complication. And I may add a morning focus that has a face with the workout complication and the Overcast complication (as I usually listen to podcasts when I work out) to make it easier to launch both. Right now those two are in my dock, but this will make it even easier.

You absolutely did say to turn off "Sleep Screen" and I just missed it.

I like the idea of using a specific Watch Face for my sleep focus.

It is a pretty cool feature that you can have a different dedicated watch face for every focus. I suppose you could do that before with shortcuts, but it is much easier now.
