Most Australian merchant payment terminals support contactless payment already so using Apple Pay + ANZ Visa is a breeze in Australia (Thank you ANZ Bank)
As far as I see the tick only indicates successfully communication between phone and terminal.
In my first week I found myself walking away for the terminal after the tick thinking that this indicated a successful transaction, in the first instance the retailer called me back, in another the retailer assumed the transaction was successful
Now I wait for terminal to indicate an approved transaction, as I always did with the tap and go credit card I no longer use
