Half a billion is a lot of money. Some people think “no big deal, Apple (or Google or Microsoft etc) can afford it” but that is just not how they operate. Half a billion investment is done because they expect it will generate substantially more revenue than investment. Apple might be one of the most prudent spenders of big capital especially forward thinking capital. SOS Satellite connectivity will effect an extremely minute fraction of users. So either Apple thinks the sales & marketing headline is worth it or they have a bigger plan in mind for satellite connectivity.
