I spent an hour reorganizing my playlist, then pushed 'done' and all the work I had invested disappeared as the songs went back to the same order as when I started.

Welcome to iMore! I'm sorry to hear that. Perhaps you should save your progress a few times so you won't lose as much if the changes don't take.
