Even the store clerk said they are nearly identical. I don't care what Apple did to bump up the speed as it was mostly unnoticeable. I compared my Iphone 3g to the store model and it may have opened apps 1ms faster but thats about it. The camera is better but 3.0 megapixels is still pretty low end. Other than that I saw nothing new. I continued walking around and I checked out other devices. I really like the E71, Eternity, and Impression and that is about it. I walked out happy, knowing that my Iphone 3g is still a little champion, still weaving and bobbing, breathing and dodging...

I got a great phone. No need to upgrade to the same phone.

I think it really just depends on who you are. Some people, like myself, notice the speed because our jobs hinge on that speed. Some people couldn't care less about the device speed, so an upgrade makes less sense. To me, I'm extremely happy i got my 3GS, but I know it's not the right time to upgrade for all people. The best news is that Apple continues to push out software updates for previous generations.

Can't appease everyone I suppose. But I disagree with everything you just said. It's night and day in terms of speed all around. Huge difference. If you could not see that, I don't know what to tell you.

Enjoy your iPhone 3G? Still a good device, just a lot slower...

PS, read this article and tell me again it's the same phone.

I thought the same thing for a little bit until I went over the specs again..

They really are different phones.. I'm not going to name the feature and spec difference but the 3GS is way ahead of the 3G.

Imagine your great phone times two... heck maybe even three.

I love my 3GS and there is a difference... a big difference. Whether you saw it in the store or not, it is for me and a lot of others.

If you're happy with an ipod/phone, then you probably don't notice too much. But if you use apps regularly, browse, text, etc, the speed difference is definitely worth it. I couldn't go back to the 3G at this point and be happy.

I have done my own speed tests between the 3g and the 3GS, non-formal, and found the 3GS to blow the 3g away!! There is most certainly a huge absolutely noticeable difference!! I respect the choice to wait till next year, though. I did that when the 3g came out an I am so glad I waited for the real 3g phone to come out.

You have been dumping on the 3GS for weeks now, so are we suppose to believe you walked into an Apple store and objectively looked at the differences between the 3G and 3GS?? Please....

Look if you are happy with your 3G then more power to you, but please don't insult everyone intelligence by trying to convince everyone the 3G is on par with the 3GS. There is too much information out there on the 3GS from independent sources that contradicts your assertions.

How many threads do you plan on starting that are pretty much the same thing?

In the words of Shakespeare, "Me thinks the lady doth protest too much."

Your trying to convince yourself the upgrade is not worth it, good luck with that, but leave us out of it ;)

While they look like the same the 2 key differences for me are: 1.) the screen smudges but wipes clean very very easy! 2.) I can notice the speed difference when loading applications and other operations. The camera is pretty awesome too.

I do NOT live in a 3G area so I am only basing my conclusions on EDGE. I can only imagine how much faster data loads on 3G.

Well said.

I think we all realize what's going on here.

Yes we do, people trying to justify that it isn't an upgrade, when in actuality, they probably want it.

After the keynote, I definitely did not think I'd upgrade. I didn't really see a difference until I SAW it. In articles, videos, etc...

Apple's keynote didn't really say much spec wise, so I waited to see those, and they are definitely worth it.

BadAsh77 and myself had a pretty good debate going for a while, in the end - I agreed with him after doing my OWN research. I didn't have to justify a purchase, I just wanted to make sure it was the right option for myself and the girlfriend. After selling our 16GB 3G iPhones, we only paid tax plus 50 for our 32GB new ones. Good deal I'd say.

And to the OP, if you don't see the differences, your testing method is flawed. There are blatant obvious differences.
