Why is there a half moon symbol near the battery indicator i have never seen it before???

It means that your iDevice is in Do Not Disturb mode.

Apple associates that Mode with the night, since people don’t want to get disturbed while sleeping, hence the moon.

And you can turn it off by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to get the Control Center. Tap the crescent moon in the panel to toggle it on or off.

You can also set it to turn on and off automatically. Go to Do Not Disturb settings and you can set the Scheduled tab to have it automatically turn off at a certain time.
