Did you try disabling and enabling iMessages ?? Sometimes that's the solution for this kind of strange stuff

Delete the entire thread. Toggle iMessage off. Sign out of iMessage. Sign back in to iMessage. Toggle back on. Start a new convo. If that doesn't work, you need to restore your phone as new.
