This may be a very simple question, but I want to make sure I have unforeseen issues. I have an old 3GS and want to give it to my son as an iTouch. Will wifi work? Anyone else do this? ATT network.

Absolutely. As long as it doesn't have service on the SIM (or just remove the SIM) it will work just fine on Wifi only.

That's what I'm doing with mine! Now if you change it to your son's iTunes account you'll lose any apps you have on there. If you keep it on your iTunes account that device will still have access to all the apps you've already put on it.

Awesome - thanks! We are stoked to not have to shell out for an iTouch. He's turning 8 and already a pro on our iPhones so he's beyond ready for an upgrade from his lil shuffle.

But be advised. with a SIM or without, it's a phone. And because it's a phone, the ability to dial 911 will always be there.

You can also set up restrictions in setting to block some aspects of the phone that you may not want him to have access

It might just be me but if you've got children who're 8 years old and dial 911 for fun....something went wrong in parenting.
