According to The Register, an announcement is due next week
A new 3G (European) version of the iPhone will be launched Monday in the UK by Apple - in a joint promotion with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany, and Carphone Warehouse. It should answer the disappointment with the US version of the iPhone which has been widely slammed for its poor performance as a phone.

Shipment date is still unknown, but "on course" for the year-end date predicted last October by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
I hope that doesn't spoil the weekend for those of you who got an iPhone yesterday!

That rumor was posted before, but is it really true? If they did that this soon, it'd be a BAD move because US 3G is available also and there have already been complaints from reviewers about EDGE speed. They could easily have used US 3G chips for US and the 2100 chip for Europe. That's if true, that is.

The US iPhone has a fixed SIM card which wouldn't be allowed (under competiton rules) in Europe, so they will have to produce a different version anyway.

EDIT: I now understand you can remove the SIM, but the phone is obviously locked to AT&T

What will be interesting is to see if Apple somehow block the use of these phones if they are imported into the US.
