Hooked up two speakers to my iPad first generation using a 3.5mm Y cord type plug wire. Hooked up the other ends to both external speakers. Only hear sound from one speaker unless I set the listen mode to monoral. This even happens using a radio receiver.

On the iPad, go to Settings → General → Accessibility and then scroll down to "Mono Audio" and make sure the toggle button is OFF.

I would also check that your audio is set evenly between left and right channels as seen here in my screenshot.

I did locate a different 3.5mm wire. Hooked up to the same Y splitter wire. With taking mononaural off there is now equal sound from both speakers. I will still use the new Y splitter cable that I purched upon arrival.
