2011 macbook pro stuck on 10.6.8

My daughters macbook HD failed and wouldn't boot. Long story short, I bought a new HD and reinstalled the original O/S which came with the computer which is 10.6.8.

I pressed the update my mac button which then downloaded all the updates for that release but nothing for 10.7 etc...

I've tried going to the app site and apple site to get the updates but am then told I can't update to 10.10 because I don't have atleast ver 10.7. I tried getting 10.7 just to get the ball rolling but that is not available at the Canadian app store.

It seems no matter which way I turn I run into a snag. Anyone have any ideas on what to try next, or is it a "take it to the apple store" situation?

Just in case anyone else has this problem in the future, a guy on the apple discussion site solved it with in minutes of me posting it.

Here's a link to the site https://discussions.apple.com/message/31498523

I have a lot of interest in this thread because I'm in a similar situation except that I never updated my 2011 MacBook Pro that came running Snow Leopard. I recently decided I want to update it but saw that I couldn't because Snow Leopard is no longer supported. So, I bought a bootable USB drive with El Capitan on it and an external hard drive to do so. I'll probably tackle it tomorrow since it's a snow day here in NYC. Once the Mac is running El Capitan, I'll just go ahead and update it to macOS Sierra from the App Store. This should be an adventure! LOL :D

I wish you good luck on your upgrade, if the usb method fails hopefully you could follow the link and download the El Capitan version that worked for me.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the external hard drive I bought is defective, so I can't go along with the upgrade just yet. Next on my agenda is returning it to the seller on eBay and then buying a brand new HD at Staples. I'll give it a whirl again afterward.
