The watchOS 4 update is going to allow specific pieces of gym equipment (setup with NFC) to talk to the Apple watch, and vice versa. I think this is a great idea, but am not sold on how much it is really needed.
Manufacturers will need to adapt and bake-in the NFC pieces needed to make it work. And for the cost of the machines (will probably be in higher end equipment?) is it really worth it?
Am torn. Still, would love to see it in action. I'm not so hardcore and don't mind the slight discrepancies in watch tracking vs equipment tracking at the gym... I suspect this will apply heavily to the hardcores that demand absolute accuracy in their fitness tracking!!
