In response to this actual thread, I would advise caution in allowing the "Freedom Fry" hysteria taking over like it did post-9/11. What happened in Paris and everywhere else that had similar things happen is horrible. Terrible people will do terrible things and they will find any justification to do so. Man is self-serving and will do anything to keep power for themselves. While I know not everyone agrees, my opinion is that religion was created to justify those baser desires and legitimize it. Whether it is the Bible or the Qur'an, you will find verse s that truly are terrible and horrendous and attempt to make believers justify truly awful acts. That said, it is important to remember that not everyone here in the U.S. observes every verse in the Bible(Good or bad verses unfortunately). I am an American but I assume the same also applies there too. In that way, if you label every Muslim by everything that is found in the Qur'an, you better accept the reverse as it applies to your own religion. Seeing all the Christians in my life and how they act, most of them would have been put to death already by the laws found in the Bible. Taking a verse from the Bible, people like to see the splinters in another's eye and not see the plank in their own.
In many ways the two religions are similar in their actions today. Both are trying to get people to follow the laws in their respective books what amounts to be a loss of freedom for all. Making government institutions religious. Both kill people justifying it with "what's right." I remember President Bush(yes I voted for him back them) telling people how God commanded him to action and we went overseas and took out those evil Muslims. It may not be so blatant but the same actions are there. It's just that the "American way" that you always hear is the Capitalist/Democracy/Christian way. In my view, in this country, those three things are so connected now in the minds of everyone that when you say one, you bring all. If you challenge that view, you get labeled as un-American, communist, socialist, muslim, anti-christ, Satan has your heart, etc.
Science, logic, reason and evidence is thrown out in favor of faith, "I feel" and what's right in the eyes of Christians who are the majority of our politicians. We went to war based on emotion and if you didn't agree, you were labeled as un-American. If you asked for clear evidence Saddam had nuclear weapons, you were labeled as a godless liberal and un-American. I remember getting caught up in that hysteria. I was raised Christian and I remember going over to my grandparents' house and having "freedom fries" because the French refused to fight due to no evidence.
We are a Christian nation to many of those in power right now and many of their constituents. The majority of people of any religion in this country is Christianity. For all intents and purposes, it is Christianity that goes to war. I have seen the majority of our soldiers being christian, they are our crusaders taking back Jerusalem again. It's all the bad parts of the Christian religion though, the stuff people want to believe in
