Sounds like a cool update. Between the xp for the poke stop and first catch of the day and the brief period of time to add your Pokemon to a recently free gym.

The "waiting until someone takes the gym down so you can put your Pokemon first" has come to and end.

I received a rather generous 500 XP “First Catch of the Day” bonus despite the app update not showing up on the iOS app store yet for me. Must have been server-side. Well, whatever -side it was on, all I care about is that I go the fairly decent 500 XP!
