Whenever I try to sign in to Pokemon GO it says "Unable to Authenticate". What is going on?

I put my username and password in, and I wait. Then something pops and says Unable to Authenticate. Please try again. Is something wrong or do I just have to wait?

Unfortunately you just have to be patient. I had that a few times yesterday.

Is it a Pok?mon trainer account? I found we were able to get in easier with google but still had server issues now and then.
