in Pokemon Go what is the journal area and how does it work?

When going in to my avatar and looking at the journal entry, what is meant to be there?
Do I write something or does something just appear, and what does appear?

It is just that a journal or diary of your events throughout the day. It shows you what Pokemon you have captured and all of your rewards from Pokestops etc.

When you click on it, give it a little bit of time and it will automatically populate the list
