I have an iphone 5 and an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I have heard that the handoff functionality of Yosemite and ios 8 will not work due to Bluetooth 2.1. Is this the case? Will I miss out on any other new features or functionality with my model?

As I understand it, the handoff function will require Bluetooth LE (4.0).

That was my understanding as well. I wonder if this will impact any other new features like calls/sms on the mac, etc...?

The Airs got BluetoothLE in 2011. The iPhone 5 is all set. Did the Airs have two releases in 2011?

Only one release of each (11" and 13") MBA in 2011, and they did release with BT 4.0. The MBPs were released twice (early-2011, late-2011) and they both only had BT 2.1, according to my research.
