slow shut down

Lately I have noticed my MacBook Pro (13", early 2013) takes over a minute to shut down. When I choose shut down from the menu, the screen goes blank almost instantly, like normal. But it stays on a blank screen for what feels like an eternity before finally shutting off. Is there any way to identify what is causing the problem? Could it be the 10.10.4 update? Or some app that is running?
