I have a MBP with 10.5.8 and have the mavericks ISO sitting on a partitioned hard drive. I am quite new to Mac, what is my next step to get it installed??

First off, is it an Intel Mac? If not, you can't install Mavericks.

Then, there is no need for an ISO. Just download the Mavericks app from the Mac App Store.

My understanding is that you MUST upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) so that you can get to the Mac App Store to get Mavericks. I do not know of any other way.

Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mavericks.

You will have to purchase Snow Leopard first ($19.99 with free shipping).
