It's been a week since updating to Mavericks. Before Mavericks I always kept a USB drive connected for Time Machine.

Reports indicate that external drives are being reformatted by Mavericks. Fortunately, I didn't update to Mavericks right away as I was waiting for a few apps to become Mavericks compatible.

The threads below are concerning and the issue appears to be beyond just WD based drives. Before I try to resume Time Machine use, does anyone have any insights into this issue?

I'm using a WD USB drive for my iTunes library and I've not noticed issues with it... never really used WD's software anyway...

I have used several different USB drives with my Mavericks MBP...drives from Seagate and WD mostly, and not had any issues..

Just plugged in the Seagate drive. Time Machine is "preparing". Will see what it looks like in the morning.

I have a 2TB WD drive on my iMac running Mavs. No issue. I've always stayed away from hard drive software never saw a need for it. The times I have tried using hard drive software there were issues. But this was like 15 years ago. Since then I've stayed away from it.

Looks like I'm good to go. So far the drive (Segate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5TB) is working as it should.

Yes, Time Machine is set to automatically backup. A bit annoying when the MBP comes out of sleep and Time Machine is backing up. Creates some noticeable lag and spinning wheel given CPU usage. But thats worth it. I also have cloud based backup.
