What are the first utilities and apps that you install when you get a new Mac? I've seen a lot of desktop screenshots that show some interesting stuff in the menu bar. It got me thinking about this.

Here are my favorite utilities and tweaks:

    Bartender - menu bar management
    1Password - password management
    Moom - window layout management
    TextExpander - typing shortcut utility
    Fantastical - calendar replacement/menu bar

Most of the above and AirServer - makes the Mac an AirPlay destination. iStat Menus is another good one I use a combo menu bar item from them that shows battery, cpu, memory and network usage at a glance. I also have DragonDrop which is a neat little utility that if you click and hold a file and then shake the cursor, it pops up a little box you can temporarily put your file in. And then the little box follows you as you change spaces and you just drag it out of the box to its destination.

I like caffeine- in a drink and the app. Keeps your Mac from going to sleep

Just out of curiosity, why do you use Easy Remote Desktop rather than OS X built in screen sharing?

I didn't realize that there was built in screen sharing until after I purchased Easy Remote Desktop. And now I'm just used to the way it works. #CreatureOfHabit

I love that every Mac has a VNC server and client built in.

I like and use Fantastical 2 and 1Password, but I don't understand the price disparity between the iOS and Mac versions.

There are independent costs for each version for them to create them and each has an audience of a certain number of users. Those things, plus market and goals of company figure into price.
