Newbie seeks Yosemite conversion help.

Hi. It seems like this site has a friendly and basic explanation of things. I look forward to using it. It was being followed by a facebook friend who knows all about Apple. I finally had to go to Apple store to get Yosemite download; it kept crashing everything. My machine is up and working but I only have emails since yesterday. I use a time machine backup system and just can't figure out how to get back all those emails. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
