Handoff and Pre bluetooth 4.0 Macs

I've got a Macbook Pro from 2010 - that means no Bluetooth Low Energy built in.

Any informed guesses about if I get a Bluetooth low energy adapter for my Mac that the Handoff and other features that require integration with an iOS 8 device will work?

I'm hoping a $20 bluetooth adapter like the "LM506 Bluetooth 4.0 Dual-Mode SMART-Ready (BLE) USB Adapter" lets me enjoy the new hotness....
