lost programs and files since maverick upgrade

Has anybody else lost any thing from their computer? Is there some place on the hard drive maybe Maverick put them that I could look for? I do a search and their simple not there. Can the Genius bar do anything? If so what cost is associated with the Genius bar? Please help this may be the biggest mistake ever.

were you using TimeMachine to do backups? Are you using A Western Digital external drive and the files are missing from that? There's a known issue with that...

no type of backup at all. their just gone forever I guess

but whats strange is why they would just disappear. Why would they just not be there and not work or something instead of being just gone
