So I gathered from the keynote address today that the iWork apps were going to be free for macs purchased after Oct 1. But what about updates if you already have copies of the iWork suite? I haven't seen any updates in the Mac AppStore yet. I still shows a $19.99 cost each. An extra wrinkle is that I purchased iWork when it still came on DVD and got it with a MBP running snow leopard. But up until now, I've have gotten updates to iWork through the standard update mechanisms.

It's a common theme on the Apple discussion forums for people who originally bought on CD/DVD.

I'm guessing that they just have to figure out how to give us the free upgrade (which their press release says that existing users are entitled to).

After reading your post, I initiated the Pages app (I have the iWorks '09) and shortly thereafter, I received the prompt depicted in the screenshot. However, when I selected to upgrade, it initiated the App Store and only located the latest iTunes update. So I updated iTunes and was never able to get the Pages update prompt again. I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens.

Did you purchase it on CD or from the Mac AppStore?

I *think* I may have purchased it online via the Apple website. My MacBook initially ran OS X Leopard. I may have purchased it via the App Store but I can't recall. I purchased it shortly after buying my MacBook.

Then it definitely wasn't via the Mac AppStore. That didn't exist until the very end of Snow Leopard.

You can go into the Mac App Store and check under 'Purchases' to see if the iWorks apps are listed, this would show if you purchased them on the Mac App Store. If you installed them from the CD/DVD then it wouldn't show up on the Mac App Store.

Yeah I know. Which is why I want to know how to get the free updates since I installed via cd.

This may be somewhat helpful... it tries to explain the what/how of the iWorks upgrades...

I have the '09 DVD version as well. I went to my wife's iMac and checked for MAS updates and the new iWorks stuff was there... then I went to the MAS on my rMBP and searched for Pages ... the PURCHASE button simply said INSTALL. Same for Keynote and Numbers... very odd.

I too purchased the CD/DVD version of iWork 09 and the Mac App store shows the Buy button rather then the upgrade button. Hopefully Apple will figure this out those of us who purchased iWork years ago will be able to upgrade without an extra cost.

    Seen elsewhere....
For those with boxed/retail versions of iWork, Apple is slowly rolling out the ability to upgrade for free. Keep checking your “Updates” tab in the Mac App Store. If you already made a purchase today, you can hit “Report a Problem” in the Account section of the Store and request a refund.

Hmmmm, perhaps I am a lil confused. Are the iWork apps free to new iMacs (bought new one Oct. 12), or is it only the update that is going to be free? I never have had iWork previously, use office for mac. Will I have to purchase these apps the first time around?
    Thanks

That's what I thought. I will just give it a lil time and check app store again. Now it shows I have to buy each app 19.99
    Thanks

Update............ I got home last night and iWork apps were showing in my purchased section of App Store and available for download.

Anyone who is having issues downloading iWorks if you purchased you Mac between 1st Oct and 22nd, visit this website:

    http://www.apple.com/creativity-apps/mac/up-to-date/

It explains how to apply directly to apple to have the programs made available on your mac store.
