Here are some shots of the new iBooks beta that comes with OS X 10.9 Mavericks Developer Preview 5. It automatically imports books that are in your iTunes library. It has a store that looks just like the desktop iTunes store. The authors can only be sorted by first name. It crashes quite often.

Apple's a little late to the book fair. Amazon has a pretty solid hold on books. That's one thing Apple can't get me to move to.

They obvi have a lot of work to do on iBooks on Mavericks but I'm glad to finally get a chance to get at it. While they might be a little late to the book game I think there are still a ton of people out there that are not using ebooks and with the people being in the iTunes ecosystem and then new people who will get introduced it is still worthwhile.

I love reading on my iPad. I can't see me doing it on my Mac.

I'm at work for 1/3 of my day and my MBP is just sitting right in front of me. So I always wondered why there was no iBooks on it because tons of times I'd fire up one of my iBooks and read it during my lunch hour or while I'm on the way to work if my MBP was already out. There are just sometimes, maybe not many, but still some times when it'd be easier to fire it up on my Mac.
