Just wondering if there was a way to set-up a MacBook, to receive a notification sound when you're using it. My wife gets emails while she's playing her games on the computer, but never knows that she received them, until she goes back into her home page. Can this be done? Thanks for any help.

I get both a visual & a light audible email notification while on my MacBook running OS X Mountain Lion. Check the screenshot below.

Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, scroll down and select "System Preferences" and then select "Notifications"

Don't see it. I'm guessing that "notifications" is new, for Mountain Lion only. I've got Lion 10.7.5. Probably need to upgrade OS to get it. Thanks.

Before that you could set up the notification tones up in mail-preferences. No banner but you should see the sounds.

No can do. Well, it's only a $29.99 upgrade fee, so that sounds reasonable. I too, have a MacBook Pro, but i've partitioned my hard drive, using Mac Boot Camp. I wonder if that would be affected, if i upgrade also?

UPDATE: Got it set up with the mail app. Thanks.

Sound still won't play. Tried everything that i could think of, but no go. Told the wife to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but she's reluctant to do it.

When you initiate the Mail app, can you set audible notifications as depicted in the below screenshots?

New message notifications & Add invitations to Calendar, are not in my Preferences set-up. What you have is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, and what i have is Lion 10.7.5. I'm trying to talk my wife into upgrading, but i might have to do it on my MacBook, just to prove to her that it won't screw up her accounts(she's a Realtor). My only concern is that my hard drive is partitioned. 400gbs-Mac, and 100gbs-Windows7. What happens to that if i upgrade?

Thanks for the info. Now i'll see if she wants to take the plunge. I can't really blame her for being gun-shy, as most Realtors have a ton of stuff on their laptops.

I understand.......To be on the safe side, backup her files to a flash drive or other external drive or to the cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, etc.)
