How upgradable are Macs?

I'm looking into buying a Mac one of these days and hopefully ditching my PC altogether. One thing is holding me back, though. I'm a hardcore PC gamer, and I know Macs don't exactly have the widest selection of games, but courtesy of Steam it's starting to grow substantially.

My question is, how upgradable are the internals? Could I easily throw in a damn good GPU and more RAM?

RAM is no worse than a PC... other than the RAM & HD, I think iMac's are not generally user upgradeable... Maybe the MacPros are...

Mac Pros (older ones I think) the RAM chips are FB-DIMMs and are harder to upgrade. Hard-drives bays are easier to upgrade on the Pro's. iMacs are the hardest to upgrade. The vid cards available for Macs are more difficult to come by tho. Check out insanelymac.org for more infos.

Easier prolly to build an OSx86 non-Mac and make it a Hackintosh instead.

That should get ya started. I used the tonymacx86 method on my PC with no real issues (except sound card and having to buy Snow Leopard from Apple).

One of the reasons I've stayed away from Mac's for so long is their updatability. Just not worth the hassle. Gaming is slowly increasing, but still aren't seeing a huge number of releases for them either.
I keep my PC around just for this reason.

I do, however, enjoy the OS quite a bit, and Final Cut Pro. Which is why I ended up buying a MBP. Its the best way to get the best of both world IMO.

You know, in the end I may end up going the MacBook route. That's probably the safest and easiest way to get, as you said, the best of both worlds.

RAM is upgradable. Usually it's built to last, the OS is where most of the efficiency and magic happens.
