OS X install

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Mac OS on my macbook. I was trying to use my install disc that came with my iMac to do it. The problem is after my macbook erased everything off the hard drive a message pops up saying this version of Mac OS X cannot be installed. Am I doing something wrong? I do have the install disc that came with the macbook but it has an older version of Mac OS X. That's why I'm trying to use the install disc that came with my iMac since it came with Snow Leopard and I can use the app store to re download Lion onto the Macbook. Any help is greatly appreciated!!
